SNEAK PEEK........

Chapter 5

T
arik sat at the kitchen table messing around his breakfast while Tricia talked to him about wedding plans.  When she got no response from him, she moved closer to him.

“Tarik, what’s the matter with you?  You have been a little distant for the past two weeks. Is there something you wanna talk about?”

“Tricia, there is something I need to talk to you about.”

“Well what is it, Boo?  You know you can talk to me about anything.”  She said as she took his hands in hers.

“Just promise me that you’ll keep an open mind about this and that you’ll hear me out?”

“Tarik, please don’t do that.  Just tell me what it is.”

Well, you remember my friend Melissa?”

“Yeah, what about her?”

“When I told you that I broke ties with her, I lied.”

Tricia let go of his hands.  She stood and began pacing the kitchen.  “What do you mean, you lied?”

“Tricia,” he said as he stood to stop her from pacing, “Melissa means too much to me to dismiss her like I told you I did.”

“Oh so, she means more to you than I do?”

“No, that’s not what I’m saying.”  He sat back at the table and sighed.

“What the hell are you saying, Tarik?  You told me that you and her were no longer friends.  How could you lie to me like that?”  She asked as she sat back at the table.

“Tricia, you made me choose between you two.  I wanted you so badly I was willing to do and say anything to keep us together.”

“And you think by telling me you lied for us, I’ll forget about the whole thing?”

“I’m not asking you to forget about it, just hear me out Tricia.  Please?”  She had tears in her eyes when she looked at him.  “What the hell can you say to me that’s gonna make me feel any better about this situation?  I mean really, what else have you lied about?  How often do you see her?”

Tarik gestured with his hands for her to calm down and listen.  “Ok, it’s like this.  Melissa knows that you exist.  She didn’t know that you have a problem with our relationship.  We only see each other once in a while.  She’d call me at work or on my cell.  I’ll call her and keep her from calling here.  We went out a few times since you and I have been together.”

Tricia shook her head side to side the whole time Tarik told his story.  “I met with Melissa two weeks ago to tell her about our engagement.  As usual, she asked when she was going to get the chance to meet you.  I had to tell her everything about how you feel about our friendship.  She was pissed when I told her that you didn’t think men and women could have platonic relationships.  Tricia, I have never seen Melissa like this before.  It hurt her more to find out that I didn’t defend our friendship to you.”

Tricia looked at him like she had just seen a ghost.  “Tarik, are you saying that her feelings are more important than mine?”

“Damn! Why you gotta keep going there?  It’s not about whose feelings are more important.  The bottom line is I was dead wrong for lying to you.  I’ll admit that, but I was also wrong to let you dictate to me who my friends should be.”  Tricia was stunned.  “Melissa and I have been friends for over half of our lives and I will not end our relationship because you’re insecure with it.”  Her mouth hung all the way down to the table. “Tarik, let me just understand what just happened.  You’re saying that no matter how I feel, you are going to continue to be in this woman’s life? You’re still going to be friends with her?”

“Tricia, she’s my best friend.  We’ve been through so much to…

She cut him off.  “I’m supposed to be your best friend.”

“Baby, that’s not how I meant it.  I’m not going to cut her out of my life.  Now you need to get used to the idea of me having a female as a close friend and trust me enough to believe that it’s platonic.”

“Whoa…” she held her hands up in front of her chest. “You don’t sit here and tell me that I’ma get used to shit!  I decide what I’ll stand for… not you!  Now if you wanna keep on seeing this so-called friend, then you need to think about how much our relationship means to you.”

“Tricia, I’m going to try to make up with Melissa.  I’m worried about her and I need you to support me on this. Don’t give me an ultimatum.  I’m not going to choose between the two of you again.  I just wish you would take some time to get to know her.  She’s a wonderful woman and I’m sure you’ll like her.”  She got up from the table.  “Well it looks like you’ve already made up your mind. But let me ask you something?  Why are you telling me this now?”  She stood by the window with her arms folded like a child not getting her way.  “I’m telling you because I don’t want to continue keeping this a secret.  We are getting married and I want Melissa to be a part of our lives.”

“Well, don’t be so sure about that.  You lied to me and I need to be sure that I can trust you.  You knew how I felt about the situation, yet you lied to me… for over six years.”  She grabbed her car keys and walked out the door.  Tarik sat there and looked at the door.
